Come To Zion

Based on a traditional Shaker tune not heard very often, “Come to Zion” is primarily written for the Section 3 band. The more popular “Simple Gifts” is utilized in the “B” section of this piece as well as in the end.

Category:  British Brass Band,
SKU:  TMPBSBB-0102
Composer:  Jorge E. Garcia

Price:  $37.00

Performance Notes:

The key signatures are well within the abilities of the Section 3 band (D minor, F minor, and F major). The percussion parts allow exposed passages for Bass Drum, Tympani (which doubles the melody in mm. 121ff.) and Snare Drum (which has challenging rudimental parts throughout the piece). The “B” section (starting at letter C) presents a rendition of “Simple Gifts” and employs differing time signatures and utilizes a hemiola both in this section and later in the piece. Finally, the Bass section will love the utilization of their middle/upper register on the melody in the recapitulation section (the part is doubled in all brasses). With these elements and others throughout the piece, it shows a piece that is educationally sound and a good festival selection for the Section 3 band.
